Biotin, a member of the B-vitamin family, is an essential nutrient in human nutrition. The benefits of biotin are especially important for healthy hair, skin, and nails.
Biotin benefits hair by keeping it shiny and helping it maintain color. More recently, this vitamin has been shown to strengthen nails in people whose nails are brittle. Daily supplementation of 2,000 mcg significantly increased nail thickness in about 90 percent of the patients.
It is suggested that biotin benefits people with diabetes by helping to break down carbohydrates and lower blood sugar levels. In both insulin-dependent and non-insulin-dependent diabetes, supplementation with biotin can improve blood sugar control and help lower fasting blood glucose levels, in some studies the reduction in fasting glucose exceeded 50 percent. Biotin can also play a role in preventing the neuropathy often associated with diabetes, reducing both the numbness and tingling associated with poor glucose control.
Symptoms of biotin
deficiency are hair loss, a red scaly rash, depression, lethargy, and
numbness and tingling in extremities.
